Our arrival in Gibraltar meant a visit to Morrisons. We were like kids in a sweet shop! Suddenly we realised what choices are open to us when in the UK. Fresh veg, fruit, meat and fish - all kinds on offer, good quality and reasonable prices.
Whilst we have been in the Med the choices have been very limited. Most of our time has been spent in Italian countries and Malta with a brief spell in Mediterranean Spain. Other than Spain the choices were mostly local and not very good quality or price. Veggies are left on supermarket shelves until they are rotten - with no change in the selling price. I fully appreciate the difficulties in some of the places we visited with these goods having to be delivered from other countries or the mainland by boat once a week - but despite the impression that these goods are of the best in taste - they are not. We very occassionally found local goods with great taste, but this was not common.
So, next time you visit your local supermarket take a look at the veggies on offer and appreciate the colours, quality, quantity of choice and cost - and take advantage of them - don't let them go to rot.
