Our friend back in Scotland contacted us a couple of weeks ago to ask if we could help with crewing for him. His plan is to move his boat from Patras in western Greece to Marseille in Southern France. As we had no visitors due and no other commitments we agreed to help out. Trying to get flights from Funchal to Patras was a nightmare with us eventually giving up and looking at Funchal to Athens via London. At this time of year, of course, everything is so expensive but as always it eventually worked out.
The trip will take them from western Greece across to the toe of Italy and then, depending on weather conditions, either up the Italian west coast or, along the Sicilian north coast and up the west of Sardinia and Corsica, or from Messina up the east coast of Sardinia, through the straits of Bonifacio and up to Marseille.
I have just sent them the GRIB report for the next few days so it looks like they have to be at the Toe of Italy before lunchtime on Wednesday as there is a 30+ knot wind due from the north by that time.
I guess that the extreme heat and the storms that is creating over the interior will have its effect!
Fair winds - more news soon.
